Final year exhibition, will Feature 3 years worth of art leading to a final piece.
In this show I will be join various artists from Lincoln Fine Art, also in their 3rd year. Artists I will be joining are featured on the exhibition blog: https://lincolndegreeshow2012.wordpress.com/
To push the experiments, with drawn lines, I used already created lines and highlighted them in opposing colours; to do this I used boxes which I painted black and white. I used different size boxes to create a cityscape which I felt gave the illusion of different dimensions (in person). Although the experiment worked well I don’t think it will work with previous experiments, as it’s more of a solo based work. By itself the work could be an interesting piece taking over a room and turning it into a small scale cityscape or a virtual space.
This image was taken as a part of my elective, “In more than
one space”. I intended to highlight areas using light that might have otherwise
been overlooked but still coincide with the concept of “In more than one
space”.
I feel in highlighting the lines and the fibres of the
carpet, the piece bring forth a new way of looking at an everyday object
showing it in a more aesthetic way.
In using light in my semester A work, I feel I have changed
the way it appears and is understood. As a piece the lighting didn’t work as
when the audience can see the light source the piece becomes more about that
aspect, whereas I want the light to change the so that it enhances the wool.
For example, in image one the piece is a lot about how the fibres become into
focus and how the light reacts with them.
When working in self made environments I evolve my piece to the
point of destroying them. I feel the piece’s completion was a full circle from
creation to destruction, but from the ashes spawned a new piece working with
the same ideas in different ways.
After working with my string work I came to the conclusion
that I needed to look into my work and see what I was making and why. Although
from the beginning I understood my work and worked in order to change and
express myself within an environment, I constantly had people viewing my work
in different way offering how they think of it, and asking me whether it’s
about the materials or the lines. After considering all this I did mini
projects looking into the works with lines as appose to materials, seeing how
my work in 2d.
Pushing my work in 2d lines I created a small installation in room, transforming my desk and items into something that reflected my work. I felt in having this in my room I could constantly understand how the lines transform ordinary items into something more than that.
After seeing how black on white went, I wanted to experiment
with white on black. I found this had a calmer feel to it, displaying the
string more as a line, as appose to the black string which was more organic and
giving life to the piece.
When using black as a base colour I found that it showed
more dirt from where people had walked into my installation. When stapling the
work the paint chipped more revealing the past paints, whereas white paint was
easier to work with and provided a cleaner, more forgiving environment.
I used UV lighting in my piece to see how the string looked;
I aimed to give it a more futuristic feel – which I felt worked. In images the
piece works, giving a new feel to the work, but in person I feel it changes the
piece into something with is not so much about the string or environment but
more about lighting, which could work in the piece but (I feel) would change
interaction element.
To process my work further I experimented with using light
and string as an object, in the aim to have beacons of light within my work. To
achieve this effect I used different height plinths and used them as test
subjects, wrapping string around them and installing lighting; this image is a prototype
of how I want the beacons to look.
During the making of the prototypes I discovered some obstacles
which I had to overcome and change; one of which is the lighting. When
installing the lights into the boxes I found that if the light source was on
show it took away from the piece giving it less of an illusionary state and
more of a mundane feel. To alter this I made various smaller versions and
changed their lighting source to see the best way to display the light but
still upkeep the state of illusion. (See images in gallery)
When using string to cover my plinths I found that I used
more string than I thought, an amount of string which seemed too much for the
result given, so I experimented more with different ways of covering the plinths,
and found that other ways worked better allowing light to be better exposed and
aesthetically the plinth looked more pleasing and more illusionary.
