“It is seeing which establishes our place in the surrounding world”– John Berger
Fowling’s art revolves around changing and evolving self
made environments, transforming them into a reflection of his thought process.
In Fowling’s work there has a strong element of interaction between the space
and the audience. The space (be it inviting or daunting) encourages audience
interaction, even to the point of unintentionally destroying the art. When
inside Fowling’s installations the materials he uses and how he uses them
provokes sensory interaction, guiding the participant out of their reality and
into his.
Although Fowling’s works can be seen as an intimidating from
the exterior, the use of materials, such as wool, override the original
discomfort and provides a sense of comfort and nurturing. By combining
architectural structures and the process of drawing (with a variation of
materials) Fowling’s work challenges the audience’s perception and understanding
of both the materials and the environment.
